LOTR: The Hunt for Gollum Release Date Window Update Given by Andy Serkis

The release date window for the highly anticipated Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has been pushed back further than its initial release plan.

It was reported last summer that Andy Serkis, who played Gollum/Smeagol in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and 2012’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, will be returning to Middle Earth to reprise the role. In addition to starring, Serkis is also attached to direct the upcoming movie.

The new Lord of the Rings movie was initially set for release in 2026, though fans will have to wait a bit longer now that Serkis has just provided a new update.

What is the new LOTR: The Hunt for Gollum release date window?

The actor and director has confirmed that the original release date window for The Hunt for Gollum has just been changed to 2027.

“Yeah, it is not 2026. It was originally going to be December 2026. It is going to be December 2027. We are right at the beginning of the writing process. We will be prepping later this year. Prep takes a good chunk of time, six or seven months, and then we will be shooting next year. So, it backs into that December 2027 release date,” Serkis told TheDirect.

Serkis is still the only cast member announced for The Hunt for Gollum at this moment. Original Lord of the Rings screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have also returned to Middle Earth to write the script for a movie focused on Gollum, with original writer/director Peter Jackson also back — this time as an executive producer. Additional screenwriters include Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

Other details for the upcoming movie have yet to be unveiled, though it is confirmed to explore “storylines yet to be told” in Middle Earth.

“Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle Earth Peter, Fran and Philippa. With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our film making family in New Zealand, it’s just all too delicious,” Serkis said in 2024.

Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum arrives December 2027.
