Emmy-winning actor Jon Hamm has officially signed on for the leading role in MGM+‘s upcoming psychological thriller anthology series titled, American Hostage. The new show will be based on the true story of a hostage-taking situation which took place in 1977.

Hamm’s newest TV show comes after the recent Apple tv+ debut of the dark comedy series Your Friends & Neighbors, which will drop its fourth episode this Friday, April 25. Prior to its release, the show already received an early Season 2 renewal. The Mad Men alum is currently atttached to star in the adventure dramedy movie Wilder & Me, and the Pixar movie Hoppers.

What is American Hostage about?

“The series follows Hamm as an Indianapolis radio reporter Fred Heckman, who is thrust into the middle of a life-or-death crisis when hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis demands to be interviewed on his popular radio news program,” reads the logline.

American Hostage will also be based on the acclaimed podcast of the same name, which hails from Criminal Content and director Shawn Christensen. Hamm also stars as Fred Heckman in the podcast. The upcoming project is created and executive produced by The Night Agent’s Shawn Ryan and Masters of Sex’s Eileen Myers.

“The combination of prolific producers Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers, a singular talent like Jon Hamm, and our partners at Sony Pictures Television, is a match made in MGM+ heaven,” MGM+ boss Michael Wright said in a statement. “This is a fascinating story about real people engaged in a real-time life-or-death struggle to keep a desperate hostage situation from spinning out of control, and I can’t think of a more gifted actor on whom to center the story than Jon.”
