Following Donald Trump‘s inauguration as president, Facebook and Instagram users have reported an unusual occurrence. Many found themselves automatically following official pages associated with the new administration, including Trump and others. While Meta has addressed the situation, some users are expressing frustration and confusion over the incident.
Here is what happened.
Meta users complain about following Donald Trump automatically
Following Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president, many Meta users found themselves automatically following official pages associated with his administration. This includes Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and First Lady Melania Trump. Complaints began circulating on social media, particularly Reddit, where users expressed confusion about these unwanted follows. Some stated they had never followed these accounts but were suddenly linked to them after the administration change.
One user wrote, “I just unfollowed him when I never followed him to begin with. I actually blocked him then still saw his stuff and then unfollowed also. Hopefully that will work. Downloading stuff so I can delete the app though so guess it won’t matter soon.”
Meta has since responded, clarifying that this was part of a standard practice when a new president takes office. The company explained that accounts tied to the White House are typically managed by the current administration. Users who followed these pages under the previous president would still be following them after the transition. (via X, formerly Twitter)
Adding to the controversy, users on Instagram reported seeing a “sensitive content” message when searching for hashtags like #democrats, #berniesanders, and #joebiden. Meanwhile, searches for Republican-related terms like #donaldtrump yielded no such warning. Meta’s communications director, Andy Stone, acknowledged the concern. He stated that it was a result of some technical glitches. Stone further added that the company was working to resolve the problem.
The incident has raised suspicions, especially after Zuckerberg’s recent policy changes, including the removal of fact-checking measures.
