Espionage, intrigue, and an all-star cast—Black Bag features a powerful premise surrounding a spy ordered by the government to spy on his wife. On the red carpet at the New York City premiere, ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim caught up with the film’s stars, including Michael Fassbender, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke, and writer David Koepp as they teased a project that might just shake up the genre for good.
Black Bag is a film about choices, particularly the tough ones that our main character, George Woodhouse, must make while facing his duty to his country and marriage. Actor Michael Fassbender, well-known for his work as Magneto in the X-Men franchise, as well as Prometheus, Steve Jobs, Inglourious Basterds, and 12 Years a Slave, shared the choice he’s made in his career that he’s the most proud of.
“You know, everything leads to this place,” says Fassbender. “It’s a lot of different ones. I suppose the big one may be getting Hunger. That kind of changed a lot for me.” He refers to his 2008 film directed by Steve McQueen, where he plays Bobby Sands, a man who participates in a hunger strike in 1981.
Naomie Harris, who portrays Dr. Zoe Vaughan in Black Bag, shared the choice she made in her career. “I think at the start of my career when I didn’t have any resources or anything, I still made the choice to always play positive, powerful, empowering images of black women,” the Moonlight actress said. “And I think that’s incredibly important, and I’m really proud of that. Obviously, that choice is easier now, but when I was first starting out, it was a really hard choice.”
Also on the carpet was Tom Burke, who has had prominent roles in films like Mank and Furiosa. He plays Freddie Smalls, and he said, “Sometimes, it’s saying no, both to jobs and on jobs. It’s a while before you feel like you have license to do that. You can go a whole summer wearing an incredibly uncomfortable hat or something like that and doing a play before you go, ‘I won’t be wearing that tonight.’ Yeah, that’s a big moment in an actor’s life, I think.”
Writer David Koepp answered the same question. Black Bag marks one of the three screenplays he has turned in for movies in 2025, with the first being Presence and the other coming later this year with Jurassic World Rebirth. He has written some of the most well-received films in Hollywood, from Jurassic Park to Mission: Impossible to Spider-Man. But based on his response, he seems to enjoy his time away from the big studio scripts.
“Every time I’ve written something on spec, every time I said, ‘No, I have an idea. I’m not gonna try and sell it, I’m gonna write it.’ And I took time and sat quietly by myself and wrote the script. I’ve never regretted that,” says Koepp. He has written many original films on spec, such as Secret Window, Premium Rush, and Kimi.
Another theme of Black Bag? Trust. There’s a certain amount of trust that hangs in the balance between George and his wife. “You know what the strange thing about it is it is built on trust,” says Burke. “Chemistry is built on trust, but you do have to take a bit of a leap of faith when you walk onto a set and you’ve only met people maybe one time before, if that, so actually by the end of the job I trusted the [whole cast and crew]. That was probably happening about two days in, but the first two days, you are kind of going, ‘okay, I’m gonna give you my trust ’cause that’s an awful lot better than trying to just be self-sufficient and totally manufacture my performance without reacting to what anyone else has done.’
Black Bag boasts quite an ensemble cast, including Harris, who has had a strong career with roles like Eve Moneypenny in the Craig-era James Bond movies, Selena in 28 Days Later, and Tia Dalma in two of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. What does she get recognized for the most?
“I mean, obviously, Bond is the one, of course,” she says. “I recently did a film called The Wasp, and not many people saw that. And I think it’s a really beautiful movie about the relationships between women because I think often people think your first love as being with the opposite sex, someone you fall in love with. But actually, I think your first love can be your best friend, and it can be just as intense as a romantic relationship and just as hurtful as well. And that’s what that movie explores.”
Black Bag arrives in theatres on Friday, March 14.
Thank you to the cast of Black Bag for speaking with ComingSoon on the red carpet.
